Peach Pies and Alibis by Ellery Adams (Book Beginnings & Friday 56)

Title: Peach Pies and Alibis
Author: Ellery Adams
Publication: 5 March 2013
Format: Kindle ebook

Amazon Description

Ella Mae LeFaye’s Charmed Pie Shoppe is wildly popular in Havenwood, Georgia—which is not surprising since Ella Mae can lace her baked goods with enchantments. The shop’s extraordinary success seems destined to continue when Ella Mae meets an engaged couple who hire her to handle the dessert buffet at their wedding.

But Ella Mae has a lot on her plate. She is also searching for the origin of her magical powers—and hoping to determine if the spark of attraction she feels for the handsome Hugh Dylan is authentic or just her new abilities gone awry.

Then Ella Mae discovers a high-standing member of the community dead, and a wedding guest becomes seriously ill at the event she’s catering. Now she’ll have to use all her sleuthing skills and culinary talents to prove her pies don’t contain a killer ingredient . . .

 Ramble-y Teaserish Stuff

I used this book on Tuesday for my Tuesday Intros & Teaser Tuesday post and thought that I would be well into another book by today, but I've barely made a dent thanks to work and exhaustion and life and whatever.

I'm not really complaining because the more time spent with Ellery the better ... though I do have, literally, dozens of her books still on my TBR and reading at the pace of a snail with narcolepsy isn't going to help anything ... but it does, at least, mean that I have a good excuse to share more blips with you.

Tuesday I used the very beginning of the first chapter, of course, so today for Book Beginnings I'm going with a bit from the end of the first chapter. It's still part of the beginning, right?

The "56" is from the 56% mark ... which I am nowheres close to as of yet but I am so looking forward to finding out why Reba might be packing heat!

I've had several "eh" books in a row the past week or so -- hence the lack of posts since October 28th. Thankfully, the Alphabet Soup group on Facebook was given it's mini-challenge for November : to read a book with a fruit, nut or vegetable in the title.

I immediately thought of Peach Pies and Alibis by Ellery Adams.

Sure, I have far too many books on my NetGalley shelf that should be read soon, but the burnout is real kids .... and Ellery has never failed me in times of "I just don't wanna."

I just downloaded it so all I really know about the book at this point is from the Amazon description, the first two paragraphs, and the random blurb from the randomly chosen 40% mark ... which, eerily enough, fits perfectly with the intro.

It's like .... magic or something.

I also know that I loved the first one in the series so I'm very much looking forward to diving in to this one. I may even pick up a small peach pie after work to celebrate the temporary freedom from the "should" list.

WWW Wednesday -- 03 November 2021

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

My Current Read :

I'm only 25% in to Pies and Prejudice by Ellery Adams even though it's been on TBR since it was first released .... in 2012.
I know. I'm horrible. It, however, is not.
I already want to take a trip south to see what kind of pie Ella Mae would say best suited me. I'm guessing something more savory than sweet. Maybe something like Shepherd's Pie .... kind of comforting, kind of heavy. Or a Beef & Guiness because, well, beer. Of course, on my way to Havenwood, Georgia I would need to stop by Miracle Springs, North Carolina and get some books from Nora and a comfort scone from Hester. Of course, on my way back home I would have to stop in Virginia and hope for a vacancy at Storyton Hall.
You might say I'm a bit of an Adams fan and there are still so many I have yet to read. I could probably spend a month or two (or more) just catching up.
So, this is the first book in the Charmed Pie Shoppe series. It's a mystery, but I often have times that I forget that when I'm reading Adams even though the mysteries are always well-plotted and tend to keep me guessing. It's the people who live that keep me coming back for more .... and have urges to hop a train and head south. Here it's Ella Mae LeFaye (formerly Kitteridge) who returns to the home that has been in her family for centuries after she discovers her soon-to-be-ex husband cheating on her. Her return is more than a bit overwhelming with the onslaught of attention from the five women who raised her -- her mother, three aunts, and Reba (housekeeper? family friend? I'm not really sure at this point .... but she might as well be family). They're all thrilled to have her home and want to help her open her dream pie shop. Not thrilled to see her is childhood nemesis and still epic "mean girl," Loralyn Gaynor. The LeFayes and Gaynors have been rivals for centuries and that's not likely to change anytime soon. The location picked out for the pie shop is where Loralyn wants to open a new nail salon after she convinces her fiancé to buy it for her. He, of course, ends up dead -- shortly after Ella Mae has a very public argument with him. Again, this is just an added bonus to the wonderful story of Ella Mae and her family and they're why I already know -- even at 25% -- that this series is going to be a must-read for me.

Random "Oh Heck on a Clamshell" Moment: A hotel guest walked by, asked about what I was reading tonight. I started to tell her and that it's by one of my favorite authors. She's written so many that I have yet to read so, out of curiosity, I looked up just how many. 43 published books as of yet unread. Actually, I believe it's more than that since I don't think that list included any of the "J.B. Stanley" books. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Recently Finished :

Don't do it. Just ... don't.

This one, however, was quite wonderful. I rambled and teased Brightwood by Tania Unsworth yesterday and only regret that it wasn't two or three times longer.

What's Next :

I have three books still on my NetGalley shelf for the year and four letters left for my Alphabet Soup Authors list. I was thinking that I would tackle the authors, but I just realized that the first NetGalley book due is the second in a series so I suppose I'll get my hands on the first one and read those ... after pie ... and maybe a serial killer ...

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams (Tuesday Intros & Teaser Tuesday)

Title: The Whispered Word

Author: Ellery Adams
Publication: 27 November 2018
Format: hardcover

Amazon Description:
In this cozy mystery by a New York Times–bestselling author, a gifted bookstore owner can find the right book for any patron, but can she find a killer?

But she and the other members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society know that sometimes practical help is needed too. Such is the case with the reed-thin girl hiding in the fiction section of Nora’s store, wearing a hospital ID and a patchwork of faded bruises. She calls herself Abilene but won’t reveal much else. And when a customer is found dead in an assumed suicide, Nora uncovers a connection that points to Abilene as either a suspect—or another target. After a second death hits town, Nora and her intrepid friends must help the new, greenhorn sheriff discern fact from fiction—and stop a killer intent on bringing another victim’s story to a close…

“A love letter to reading, with sharp characterizations and a smart central mystery.”—Entertainment Weekly

Ramble-y Teaserish Stuff
The Whispered Word starts immediately after The Secret, Book & Scone Society so it only made sense to me to reread them back-to-back. So .... I would have do so anyway because I've been in dire need of the special kind of Ellery magic .... but TWW does begin immediately after TSBSS.

I know a lot of series claim that they don't need to be read in any particular order.

Don't believe them.

Ever.

Especially not with this series.

You need the background from the first to understand the growth in the second and to fully appreciate the book-hugging awe. I'm assuming that there will be more to come in the third and fourth and ... so on (the fifth being due out in April). I just need to decide if I'm going to wait for my hardcovers arrive ... or break down and start with the ebook for the next one. It's a rough week so I'm guessing ebook. Even next day delivery for the next hardcover might be too long.

And as they untangle a web of corruption, they also discover their own courage, purpose, and a sisterhood that will carry them through every challenge—proving it’s never too late to turn the page and start over…

Ramble-y Teaserish Stuff
This is actually a re-read -- something I seldom feel the urge to do with books published within the past decade or so. I'll marathon watch television series multiple times -- especially when a new season is approaching -- but I rarely do with books.

Ellery Adams is different. In the best way.

I had already teased and rambled after the first time I read this gem in September of 2018 ... but it wasn't a Friday 56 post so that gave me the perfect excuse to share again.

The Secret, Book & Scone Society by Ellery Adams (Tuesday Intros & Teaser Tuesday)

"First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros" is from the first paragraph or two of a book being read now (or in the future) and is hosted by I'd Rather Be At The Beach. "Teaser Tuesday" at The Purple Booker asks for a random line or two from anywhere in the book currently being read.

************************************

I have a strange aversion to putting holds on library books. If a book has already been checked out when I go to look for it (since I also seem to have an aversion to checking the catalog ahead of time), then it obviously isn't the right time for me to be reading said book. I had to wait almost an entire year for the circulation gods to smile on me and the stars to align and for Ellery Adams' The Secret, Book & Scone Society to be in the stacks at just the right moment.

It was well worth the wait.

Miracle Springs, North Carolina is a place where people go for healing -- physical and emotional. It's what drew Nora Pennington there after personal tragedy, and where she opened Miracle Books and began to offer her own "bibliotherapy" to select customers in order to help them heal as needed through the pages of a good book (often, several of them).

I absolutely love the idea of bibliotherapy. I've often been saved from myself thanks to a book and will often find myself recommending books to others who seem to be "in a mood."

When a potential customer of Nora's is killed before she could give her recommendations, she teams up with some other local women -- all of whom have their own painful secrets -- to form The Secret, Book & Scone Society to find out the truth of what is happening in their town. Along the way scandals are uncovered, secrets are divulged, romance lingers, and a sisterly bond is formed.

The mystery angle of the book was a good one and it kept me guessing as Ellery often does, but the real highlight of the book was watching these women and their friendship grow. My heart ached for each of them and I would love to be able to grab a mug and a scone and join their sessions. I would especially love to know what books Nora would pick out for me ... as if my TBR wasn't already toppling.

First Lines
The man on the park bench stared at the empty space above the knuckle of Nora Pennington’s pinkie finger.
Strangers were always hypnotized by this gap. They would gaze at the puckered skin stretched over the nub of finger bone for several awkward seconds before averting their eyes in disgust, pity, or both.

Fave on 4s
p4 - “Stories don’t change much across continents and centuries. Hearts are broken. Pride is wounded. Souls wander too far from home and become lost. The wrong roads are taken. The incorrect choice is made. Stories echo with loneliness. Grief. Longing. Redemption. Forgiveness. Hope. And love.”

p44 - Hoping to keep a firm hold on the positive energy that had been building among the four of them, Nora said, “The key to our success lies in careful listening. And secrecy. From now on, we can only trust each another.”

p64 - “After hanging out with you gals on Sunday, though, I realized that I wanted more of this.” She gestured around the circle. “We’re no Fellowship of the Ring, but I haven’t had girlfriends since high school. Not close ones, anyway. These days, my closest friends are all fictional.”

p94 - Nora avoided making eye contact with Jed, but she was hyper-aware of his arm around her waist and of the way his fingers pressed into her lower back. She felt possessed and protected. And completely unnerved.

p144 - “She won’t let anyone see the real her,” Nora pointed out. “None of us have been willing to do that. We’ve become adept at hiding behind our armor. Until we found each other. I don’t know about you, but this is the first time in years I’ve opened up to anyone.”

p204 - “That sounded a bit like therapy.” His tone wasn’t judgmental. Merely inquisitive.
Nora was reluctant to explain her role of self-trained bibliotherapist, but since Jed had already told her that he was open to nontraditional forms of medicine, she said, “Sometimes, I recommend certain titles to help people find healing.”
Jed mulled this over. “But you gave that customer a stack of novels. How does fiction heal?”
“Not all injuries are physical,” Nora said, and moved off to ring up a customer waiting at the front counter.

p224 - “The three of us are crashing this party. And by the end of the night, we’ll have what we need to take care of the vermin infesting our town.”
June hooted in enthusiastic agreement. “Pass me the rat killer, sister. I am ready to do some exterminating.”

A Killer Plot by Ellery Adams (Book Beginning & Friday 56)

Friday 56 (share from the 56th page or 56% mark) is hosted at Freda's Voice (today 56%)
& Book Beginnings (share the first few sentences) is at Rose City Reader.

In the small coastal town of Oyster Bay, North Carolina, you'll find plenty of characters, ne'er-do-wells, and even a few celebs trying to duck the paparazzi. But when murder joins this curious community, the Bayside Book Writers are there to get the story...
Olivia Limoges is the subject of constant gossip. Ever since she came back to town-a return as mysterious as her departure-Olivia has kept to herself, her dog, and her unfinished novel. With a little cajoling from the eminently charming writer Camden Ford, she agrees to join the Bayside Book Writers, break her writer's block, and even make a few friends...
But when townspeople start turning up dead with haiku poems left by the bodies, anyone with a flair for language is suddenly suspect. And it's up to Olivia to catch the killer before she meets her own surprise ending.

************************************

A Killer Plot has been on my TBR since it was first released ... in 2010. I finally stopped letting other things distract me from it and I'm so very glad that I did! I think maybe it knew it wasn't the right time back then because I'm not sure I would have appreciated it as much six years ago.

Olivia Limoges, the main character, is a bit much. She's standoffish and curt and pretty much does what she wants when she wants. She had a tough life growing up and worked hard to overcome much and now, at 40, she's well-off and quite happily alone with her businesses, a few friendly acquaintances around town, and her beloved poodle, Captain Haviland.

I've read a lot of reviews for the book where the readers don't like Olivia. Several of them didn't finish because of it. They've seriously missed out. One of the things I loved best about this is seeing how much Olivia grew over the course of the book. She wasn't very likable at the beginning. At the end, though, I wanted to give her a hug, a right-hearty "attagirl," and invite her out for coffee.

From a "cozy mystery" standpoint, this was delightful. (I know -- I use that word a lot here. I obviously just have good taste in books.) I had my suspicions over whodunnit .... a few different times. I like it when they keep me guessing and I also like it when the big reveal comes and I can pat myself on the back over one of my theories being at least partially right. And, like so many other cozies, we have the intriguing potential love interest(s), the quirky group of friends, and good little bit of snark.

This is the first of eight (so far) in Adams' Books by the Bay series. I'm already planning on reading at least one more this year according to my Reading Thing but I may just need to bump something else off of the list (or read really fast) so I can read more!

Murder in the Secret Garden by Ellery Adams (Tuesday Intros & Teaser Tuesday)

Normally I would copy & paste the Amazon description for the book I'm featuring, but when Ellery Adams shared the video trailer for her latest Book Retreat Mystery, Murder in the Secret Garden, I couldn't resist!

Frances Hodges Burnett's The Secret Garden was always a favorite of my mom's and of mine. The book, the movies, the musical ... all of them are near and dear. I was downright giddy when I found out that the third Storyton Hall tale was going to have a Secret Garden slant and even moreso when Ellery sent me an autographed paperback copy to devour. Unfortunately, I'm not used to carrying actual books around anymore and forgot to throw it into my purse a couple of nights so ended up reading something else ... but that just means that it lines up perfectly with Tuesday Intros and Teaser Tuesday!

"First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros" is the first paragraph (or two) of a book being read now or in the future and is hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea. "Teaser Tuesday" from Books and a Beat asks for a random line or two from anywhere in the book currently being read.

The first book in the series I enjoyed because of how it gave the backstory to Storyton Hall and Jane (and her sons') legacy. It truly is a remarkable place that I would love to visit if only it actually existed. The second book I was a little "eh" about because I had figured the mystery part out fairly early on and wasn't feeling the romance angle in Jane's life. I've got about 100 pages left to read for this one and it has me downright flummoxed! There are few things in this life that I enjoy more than a flummoxing by a well-written mystery.

Rambling About.. Ellery Adams' Murder In The Paperback Parlor

Title: Murder In The Paperback Parlor
Author: Ellery Adams
Publication: 4 August 2015 -- Berkley
First Line: “You expect me to break that with my bare hand?” Jane Steward, manager of Storyton Hall and mother of six-year-old twin boys, pointed at a piece of wood in disbelief.
Favorites on 4s:
4% - "De Nobis Fabula Narratur," the twins replied, doing their best to pronounce the Latin words correctly. "Their Story Is Our Story."
34% - Jane bit into a biscuit and couldn't help but sigh. There was something profoundly soothing about the taste and texture of the soft, buttery dough.
44% - "My novels might be filled with intrigue and violence, but I don't act out my plots."
74% - "Think of all the books in the library that have plain brown leather covers. They look utterly unremarkable. Now, consider what happens when the cover is opened—how a cornucopia of images sweeps the reader along on an unpredictable journey. Your guests are all like books you’ve never read before."

Ramble: I read the first book in Ellery Adams' Book Retreat Mystery series before I started blogging and fell in love with it. The series is set at Storyton Hall -- a book-themed hotel in Virginia that is managed by Jane Steward, a widowed mother who lives on the property with her six-year-old twin boys. Jane is also tasked with being a guardian of the property's great secret -- a library of rare manuscripts that few know exist. Several of the staff at Storyton know and are tasked at guarding Jane and her sons. Of course, this would probably all be easier if people would just stop getting killed on property. This installment takes place just before Valentine's Day and the hotel is hosting a Romancing The Reader event featuring Regency romance novelists and themed events. After the murder of one of the star novelists headlining the event, Jane and her friends, family and staff work together to solve the crime and protect the reputation and secrets of Storyton.

As I said, I fell in love with the first book in the series. A book themed hotel hiding treasures like never published Shakespeare? Where do I send my resume? I've worked in hotels since high school and I'm sure my family wouldn't mind living in the quaint village of Storyton....

This installment didn't grip me quite as much as the first. Maybe because there wasn't as much about the secrets or maybe because I've never enjoyed Regency romances or maybe because the romance sideline in this book falls incredibly flat for me. I didn't find that I much cared who the guilty party was and had guessed the twists (and the murderer) well before the reveals. Still, I love Storyton and Jane's friends and neighbors and I am so excited about the next installment having a tie-in to The Secret Garden! Even if I solve that mystery early, too, it will still be worth the read if only for the glorious snippets of writing like the last of the "Favorites on 4s" quote above.
